Every Day Is Perfect
We’ve all done it—we’ve imagined the “perfect day.” Not just pictured it, but felt what it feel like to live it.
It’s that day where everything goes exactly as you planned. No surprises. No glitches. Just smooth sailing.
Well, I’ve tried living that day in real life—and you can probably guess how it went. It didn’t. Because reality, and other people, don’t exactly follow our script. They didn't get the memo, and even if they did, they’ve got their own plans.
The truth is, chasing perfection is really just chasing control. And life has a way of reminding us . . . we’re not in control.
But here’s the thing that's hard to grasp: every day is already perfect. Not the perfect you dreamed about, but the perfect that unfolds. Reality is perfection. It's what happens; imperfect is what we plan.
Now, that doesn’t mean you stop daydreaming or stop planning. Those are useful tools. But here's the tool we often leave in the toolbox: response. How we respond when things don’t go the way we pictured.
I’m reminded of a phone call I had years ago with someone interviewing for a job. We were going back and forth, everything going fine—until I gave an answer they didn’t expect. You could hear the disappointment in their voice. From that moment on, the spark was gone. They couldn’t adjust, couldn’t respond to something unplanned. But that job—like life—needs someone who can.
It’s the same lesson my pal Doug O’Brien once shared with me about space rockets: they’re off course more than 90% of the time. The reason they still reach their destination? Course correction. That’s built into the plan.
So whether you’re shooting for the moon, or just planning the perfect get-together, leave room for responding. That’s the real secret tool for the perfect day.
All the best,
John
