It's A Mistake
The Grasshopper recently left me this note in my mental mailbox: “Not admitting your mistakes is a mistake.”
But I realized there's even a bigger mistake: not knowing we’re making a mistake.
That kind of ignorance has a price. Any TV courtroom drama will tell you: “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Same with mistakes — we don’t get a pass just because we didn’t notice. We're gonna pay a price.
So how many laws are we breaking that we’re oblivious to? Too many to count.
So how do we zero in on the mistakes we’re making that count the most? It’s easy. Look to where you're losing in life.
There’s always a trail of breadcrumbs that leads to that loss. If you trace it backwards, step by step, you’ll find the choices that landed you there. That’s your mistake.
The way to outgrow mistakes is simple: recognize them, then stop repeating the steps that keep you repeating them.
What never works is blaming someone else. “If he hadn’t done this…” or “If she hadn’t said that…” That thinking guarantees you’ll keep making the same mistakes. That kind of finger pointing keeps you locked in on losing.
Another trap is defending our mistakes. It’s surprising how often we argue — in our outside voice — for our own limitations. That’s a debate we're going to lose.
As long as we draw breath, we'll make mistakes. That’s right up there with death, taxes, and reruns of The Simpsons. So avoiding mistakes isn’t the main goal; owning up to them is.
Once you own your mistake, odds are in your favor that you’ll repeat it less often, and increase your winning percentage.
Too proud to admit your mistakes? Don’t make me quote the bible as to what “goeth” before a fall. The good news is you don’t have to admit them to anyone but yourself. Once you discover them, own them and outgrow them. It’s a winning combination.
All the best,
John
