On the Verge of Distinction
Many years ago, a phrase popped into my mind out of nowhere: “The Verge of Distinction.”
I knew what “the verge of extinction” meant, but this twist of words made me stop and think.
So I looked up “distinction.” Lots of definitions came up, but one really grabbed me:“Excellence that sets someone apart from others.”
That’s when this question hit me: What excellence do you have that sets you apart—something that not only benefits you, but also benefits others?
In the past, I’ve called that your gift. It’s the thing you didn’t have to work hard to get. It just comes naturally. It makes you different. And when you recognize it—and use it—you move closer to that Verge of Distinction.
When you don’t recognize it, though? That’s when people stay stuck in jobs or situations that don’t really fit them.
I know. I’ve been there.
The last job I had in my broadcasting career—I took it for one reason: money. I had the credentials and the skills, sure, but deep down I knew it wasn’t right. It was keeping me from something I was more suited for at that point in my life.
And then—what felt like bad news at the time—happened: I got fired.
After the panic of being unemployed wore off, I realized it was a good thing. Some would call it a blessing. It forced me to see that I was using my gift—communicating—but in too small a space. I was benefiting only a few. The paycheck was good, but in the bigger picture, it was a lose-lose.
I didn’t have the guts to quit, so reality stepped in and gave me the push.
Maybe you’re at a crossroads right now, wondering, “What’s next?” Before you take that next step, take stock of your gift. Ask yourself: How can I use this in a way that benefits more than just a few, and me too?
Here’s a little practice that works: Write this question on a card and keep it by your bedside—“How can I best use my gift?”
Ask it each night before going off to sleep. And don’t be too surprised when an answer comes—sometimes from out of the blue.
This practice will open your eyes to distinctive new ways of making your old ways extinct.
All the best,
John
