I Don’t Give a Flying . . .
The Grasshopper once whispered something to me that stuck: “No one can make you care, but there is a price to pay for not caring.”
Think about that for a moment.
Caring is about opening the door and letting others in. Not caring? That’s slamming the door in their face.
When there’s only room in your life for you—guess what? You don’t really care. And caring isn’t just about writing a check or giving away resources—it’s about giving a piece of yourself.
Remember that old Hallmark slogan, “When you care enough to give the very best”? Well, the “very best” isn’t a fancy gift. It’s you.
Here’s something else I’ve noticed: a lot of times, not caring is just a defense mechanism. It’s self-protection. The logic goes: If I keep people or things at arm’s length, they can’t hurt me. Makes sense on the surface, right? But then I have to ask: what exactly are you holding at arm’s length?
Here’s the tricky part—you can’t fake caring. There’s no book, no YouTube video that can teach it. If you don’t feel it, it shows. Volunteering at the soup kitchen, for example, doesn’t mean much if you’re just going through the motions. People can see right through that.
But if you start paying attention to how much you don’t care, you might also start noticing the wall it builds between you and the rest of the world. Once you see that wall, you can get curious: What could I actually care about?
You don’t have to care about everything—or everyone. Just start with one thing. That’s enough to begin.
Because here’s the reality: you can spend a lifetime making excuses for why you don’t care. You can even make a list of those things. That exercise? It'll produce a long, boring speech someone can read at your funeral, that few will care to attend.
All the best,
John
