I Object!
Who hasn’t seen this scene? In a courtroom drama — Law and Order, Perry Mason — an attorney jumps up and shouts, “I object!”
They cite some point of law, the judge rules, and the trial moves forward.
Years ago, The Grasshopper laid down this gavel-pounding truth: “If you’re in court, respond to the objection. If you’re in your head, don’t.”
Think about it. An objection in your head is just one thought arguing with another — a debate that never really ends. And notice this: when you’re debating, you’re not doing. You're delaying any action towards a solution.
And if you’re anything like me, those internal debates can go on and on. Nobody wins. We just get tired and eventually quit.
And here’s a clue it’s gonna be a long back and forth: anytime you hear yourself saying “should” or “shouldn’t” — buckle up, you’re in for an all-nighter.
So how do you end the debate? By observing it instead of joining in.
Simply choose to watch how your thoughts play tug-of-war with each other. Notice how each side fights for the last word. From the sidelines, it can be pure entertainment — like your own personal sitcom.
But the second you step in and argue, the fun ends, and you’re back on that mental treadmill — running hard, going nowhere.
Here’s the escape route: the moment you notice you're about to object to your own thoughts, you can choose: Observe . . . or participate.
One takes you out of the fight. The other leads to exhaustion. And honestly? Fighting with yourself is about as silly as cheating at Solitaire. There's no real winner.
The fight ends when the objections stop. So if you want end your internal courtroom drama and move forward, here’s the secret:
Object less; Observe more.
All the best,
John
