Your Story Or Your Life?
We’ve all seen it in some bad TV drama: the thief snarls, “Your money or your life!”It’s supposed to be a dramatic choice, but really, it’s no choice at all. Of course we’d give up the money to save our life.
But here’s the strange part: in everyday living, we don’t always make that same choice. We often give up our life—our energy, our life force—without even realizing it.
Think about someone caught up in addiction. Family and friends may stage an intervention and put it bluntly: “Your drugs or your life!” It’s the same clear-cut choice as in the TV drama. But when we’re tangled in our own stories, the obvious can get cloudy.
Life has two meanings. There’s the story of your life—your history, your identity, your justifications. And then there’s the life force itself, the energy that animates you. Too often, we cling so tightly to our story that we choke off the very force that keeps us alive.
Watch someone who drinks to the point of numbness. You witness their life force draining away in real time. They’re choosing their story—the justification, the habit, the escape—over life itself.
That’s the choice all of us face: your story or your life.
Every decision we make either gives us more life or drains it away. Holding on to anger? That’s choosing anger over life. Nursing a grudge? That’s trading life for resentment. Keeping up a façade? That’s giving up life for something shallow.
If you want life to flow freely, you’ve got to loosen your grip on the story you tell yourself. Notice how life flows into your passion; watch how it drains from your addiction. Let it go, and reclaim your passion for life.
We all start out fully alive. We begin our life that way and then lose our way. We trade our life force for the stories we clutch. The way back? Let go of the story and choose life.
So let me ask: Your story, or your life? Pick wisely, and pick soon—because the longer you wait, the harder it is to see the choice clearly.
All the best,
John
