How Did I Miss That?

You know, I don’t think there’s a single one of us who doesn’t have a mental list of missed opportunities. And isn’t it funny how quickly they bubble to the surface?

Then we start playing that “what if” game—rewinding the tape in our mind and imagining what we could’ve done differently to grab hold of those chances.

And every time we hit replay, we stir up the same old frustration. We beat ourselves up and focus on how stupid we were. But here’s the kicker: while we’re busy doing that, we’ blind ourselves to the opportunities right in front of us.

We’ve convinced ourselves that opportunities are rare, like trying to flag down a cab in New York City on a rainy night. But that’s not true. Opportunities are everywhere. They’re flowing constantly. We just don’t notice them because our eyes are glued to the past—a place where opportunities no longer exist.

I will grant you this: the exact same chance you missed might not come back around again. But here’s the good news: something better could be waiting . . . if you’re not stuck down that rabbit hole of regret.

One of my favorite reminders of missed opportunities comes from the Persian poet Rumi. He said, “Don’t grieve for what doesn’t come. Some things that don’t happen keep disasters from happening.”

What if you woke up tomorrow with the simple belief that opportunity is waiting for you to wake up? How would that shift your focus—from yesterday’s losses to today’s possibilities?

Give it a go. Make that subtle change in attention. You’ll start to notice: opportunity isn’t rare. It’s always there.

All the best,

John
