Rites That Are Dead Wrong
I've learned, late in life, there are traditions worth holding on to . . . and others we’d be better off outgrowing. But how do you tell the difference?
Here’s a question to ask yourself: Is a tradition helping you grow, or holding you back?
There are rites of passage . . . and then there are rites we need to get past. Getting stuck in the so-called “right” way of doing things can keep you resisting life, instead of living it.
It’s worth noticing: a tradition may be a rite — but it might not be right for you.
•Do you always vote a straight ticket?
•Do you feel you must date or marry someone of your same faith? Your same race? Ethnic background? Culture?
•Do you worship only the “one true” God?
It’s hard to grow when you rule out so many other options.
Growth, by the way, is temporarily uncomfortable. But it leads to a more comfortable life — because so many things no longer require your resistance.
And resisting an evolving world? That eats up a ton of energy. And the outcome is always the same: you’re left behind, looking for someone to blame.
One last thought about “should, must, and ought”: You don’t have to give up your principles. Just pause . . . and examine them. Are they really yours? Or are they an inherited rite that could be dead wrong?
All the best,
John
