Where Do You Want To Go?

You know that old line people throw at someone who’s lost: “You can’t get there from here.”

Well, that’s exactly what it feels like when we’re stuck and trying to move forward in life.

Here’s the problem: we keep looking the wrong direction for directions.
We keep looking back.

We get fixated—like a dog with a bone—on how we got here in the first place. But that doesn’t really help. Looking back is just a history lesson. Interesting maybe, but not very useful if you’re trying to move ahead.

Think about it this way: imagine you’re blindfolded and dropped off in the middle of nowhere. Now, instead of looking around for a way out, you spend all your energy thinking back on the car, the camel, the Uber, the helicopter, or the submarine that got you there. That’s focus in the wrong direction.

A lot of therapy works that way—spending session after session on how you got where you are. And sure, it can be helpful to understand the reasons. But once you’ve satisfied that curiosity, it’s time to shift gears. The real question is: how do you build a bridge from where you are . . . to where you want to be?

Here’s the mantra: Where do I want to go? It gives you a goal to shoot for rather than trying to figure out how you shot yourself in the foot.

That vision—your aspiration—is what pulls your attention away from the muck and points it toward the oasis of options that lie ahead.

Become a bridge builder and leave your story behind. It’s the formula to get your focus off of continuous rewind.

All the best,
 John
