How To Be Happier

I’m pretty sure if there were a real formula for happiness, it would already be for sale on cable TV. “Act now! Hurry! Not available in stores!”

But the truth is, happiness isn’t something you can buy. It’s a state of mind. It drifts in and out. No matter where you live, it doesn’t seem to put down permanent roots.

That said, I’ve found there is a way to coax happiness back into town — at least for a while.

Here’s the simple tip: have something to look forward to.

When happiness packs its bags and disappears, this one little practice can work like a magnet to pull it back.

Now, I know living in the present moment is the most rewarding way to live. But let’s be honest — we don’t always stay there. When we can’t, the next best thing is having something on the horizon — something real to look forward to.

It doesn’t have to be monumental. You don’t need to plan a trip around the world. It could be as simple as looking forward to an Amazon delivery. Just the thought of it can add a little warmth to your day.

This isn’t about fantasy or daydreaming. It’s about something real — something you can point to, something that will happen.

And here’s where I’ll make an exception to a word I rarely use: always. Always have something to look forward to. Because it will pull you forward.

And when you finally experience the thing you were waiting for, line up another one right away. If you're a woman, think of it like carrying tissues in your purse (did you ever meet a woman who didn't have them?) You may not need them every day, but when you do, you’ll be glad they’re there.

Having something to look forward to is like that. Make sure to have one tucked away.

All the best,

John
