Logjams
Here’s another great title for a book I’ll probably never write: Getting the Logs Out of Logjams.
So, what causes logjams? Let me answer with a quick story.
Years ago, my neighbor Ed—he was an air traffic controller and also a pilot—told me that 99% of airplane crashes are caused by human error.
Now think about that for a second because the same thing applies to traffic jams. It’s not usually the number of cars on the road that slows things down. It’s a few drivers who aren’t paying attention. One inattentive move can jam things up for everybody.
But this isn’t really about cars, or planes, or boats, or trains. It’s about attention.
If you take a look at any logjam in your own life, you can usually trace it back to a lack of attention somewhere along the line. And yes, it’s easy to spot when someone else drops the ball—but today, I’m asking you to look inward. What logjams are you creating because you’re not giving something your full attention?
It could be in your job. It could be in your relationships. It could be in your personal life.
Here’s a quick example: I’ve never interrupted a pharmacist while they were filling a prescription. Why? Because I want them laser-focused. One slip-up on their part could put someone’s life at risk. Their attention matters.
And so does yours.
The naked truth is, logjams happen when we try to focus on too many things at once, instead of the one thing that really needs us. You already know what that one thing is—it’s just buried down on your to-do list.
Let me say it out loud: we already know what our problems are, and we already know the solutions. What blocks us is the logjam of scattered attention. Because when you scatter attention, you water down results.
Attention is the most powerful tool we’ve got—but too often it sits at the bottom of the toolbox, gathering dust. Maybe today’s the day you pull it out, dust it off, and use it to finally get yourself out of a jam.
All the best,
John
