How Change Happens
I’ve been helping people make changes for over 40 years. And here’s what I’ve learned: there’s one big difference between the people who actually change and the ones who don’t.
The ones who succeed? They grab the ball and run with it. The ones who don’t? They stay stuck—hoping. And as the old line goes: If you hope in one hand and spit in the other, which hand fills up first?
Now, let me be clear: temporary change isn’t really change. It’s just a Band-Aid on a deep cut—it won’t hold for long.
A good friend of mine, Paul, likes to say, “People don’t change.” And you know what? He’s mostly right. But I’d add this: people can evolve.
That’s the real secret. Change begins when you start evolving—from where you are now to where you want to be. Evolving is always forward motion. If you slide backward, you’re not changing—you’re just circling back
And here’s the hard truth: if you’re not willing to commit to change as something permanent, you’re wasting your time. That’s what I call the “Diet Myth.” People go on a diet to lose weight. Then the diet ends, the weight comes back, and nothing really changes—because they never committed to a lifelong shift in how they eat and drink.
So how do you know if you’re ready for real change? Try this little test. Draw a line from 1 to 100. On one end, write: “Nice to have.” On the other end, write: “If I don’t get this, I can’t breathe.”
Now, mark where you honestly land. If you’re not above 80%, don’t bother. Until you hit that level of commitment, you’ll just spin your wheels.
And remember these two realities of life:
- Nobody can go to the bathroom for you.
- Nobody can change you. Only you can do that.
Real change takes a deep personal realization—that you’re ready to evolve permanently in a new direction. Because “temporary” is the enemy of change. And if you don’t get that, you won’t evolve . . . you’ll just revolve.
All the best,
John
