Get A Clue!

We all have a skill we don’t use nearly enough. It’s called sensory acuity.

That’s just a fancy way of saying: paying attention to what’s going on around you.

Most of the time, we’re so wrapped up in “me” that we miss what’s happening with “them.” And that’s how you miss the clues.

Picture this: some guy in the break room at work, cracking off-color jokes. He thinks he’s killing it. Meanwhile, people within earshot are cringing. He doesn’t even notice. That’s a blind spot.

Now, I’d bet we’ve all said or done something a little stupid or tone-deaf. But here’s the thing: when you don’t notice the reaction, you dig yourself even deeper.

Here’s something to open your eyes to: people will advertise what matters to them. But if we’re only tuned in to our own broadcast, we miss the signal. And when that happens, their needs go unmet, and we come across as indifferent . . . or worse.

So here’s a little experiment: for the next few days, shift your focus. Zero in on somebody else. Notice what’s important to them. It’ll get you out of your head and into their world instead.

And that’s where the growth is. You already know what it’s like living on your planet. Take a trip to theirs. You’ll be more worldly for it.

Sensory acuity starts with a simple step: realizing there’s someone other than you. And the bonus? People won’t have to roll their eyes and tell you to “Get a clue!”

All the best,

John
