One Foot On The Ground
You know the phrase, “To make a long story short”? Whenever I hear it, I know the story’s about to get a whole lot longer.
Years ago at a management conference, I picked up a little nugget of wisdom that stuck with me: “Shorten the storm.”
Now, when I talk about “long” and “short” today, I don’t mean storytelling. I’m talking about the long view versus the short view — the big picture versus the small picture.
I’ve always loved big-picture people. They’re fun to be around. Their bubbles tickle. They’ve got vision. Sometimes they’re just dreamers, sometimes they’re visionaries — but either way, their enthusiasm is contagious.
On the other side, you’ve got the small-picture folks. They’re the detail people. But sometimes they get stuck in the weeds. They can’t get past step one. And that keeps the dream tethered to the ground.
Now, here’s the un-sanitized reality: both perspectives have their upsides and their downsides. But when push comes to shove, the short view — the detail work — is what gets you to the big picture promised land.
Big dreams have to be broken down into parts. You have to shorten the storm long enough to see the components, and figure out the effort it’s going to take to build the dream.
The short view matters because it’s about what’s happening now. And you can’t deal with now in the future. Meanwhile, the long view can be so pie-in-the-sky that the dreamer ends up owing the piper.
Lean too hard on either end — all short or all long — and you end up short of the mark.
So here’s the long and the short of it: whatever your dream is, you’ve got to keep at least one foot on the ground if you want to walk the path to make it real.
And at some point, every big dream requires a gamble. The odds are long you’ll succeed if you give short shrift to short.
All the best,
John
