Characters Of Defamation

The Grasshopper once dropped this on me: “Aspersions cast a wide net.”

And you know what? He was right.

I think back to some aspersions cast my way years ago. They weren’t based on facts. They were the kind of thing that sounded like: “I know you did something.” But when you asked for proof? Nothing. Zero.

Here’s what I’ve learned: people who throw around unsupported accusations cast their net so wide that all the fish slip right through. In the end, they catch nothing.

Now, if you’ve ever tried arguing facts with one of these folks, you already know—it’s pointless. They’re immune to evidence and consumed with conjecture. They’re the best “goalpost movers” you’ll ever meet. Knock down one of their claims, and they just slide over to another empty accusation.

Let me give you a real example.

“You said you’d do X.”

“When exactly did I say that?”

“I read it on your website.”

“Where specifically on my website did you read that?”

“I don’t remember, but I saw it. Anyway, you didn’t do X like you claimed.”

“I never said or wrote I’d do X.”

“Well, you should do X. And because you don’t—you’re a fraud.”

That’s how it goes.

Back when I hosted a radio talk show, most of the callers were just like this. Baseless aspersion casters. Sadly, that’s still true today, which is one of the reasons I NEVER listen to call-in talk shows.

These “characters of defamation” love being angry. They love to argue. Me? I don’t.

If you want a real discussion, built on facts, I’m all in. But if you just want to vent your spleen—go right ahead and call a talk show. That’s peachy keen with me . . . because I won’t be listening.

All the best,

John
