Give This Instead

There’s a gift that’s always welcome . . . and it doesn’t cost a thing. If you want to bring something pleasing, something that brightens a room—bring this:

Your light.

I know it’s generous to share knowledge and resources, but the gift I’m talking about comes from you – from who you are. It begins by giving someone your full attention. Attention without an agenda.

Just keep an open space for them as you interact. That means to be with them rather than with your thoughts about them, or judging what they're saying. When you open a space, you’re not interfering with the communication by keeping your attention on you. When you open, you can take them all in, and what comes back out is your light, not your opinion.

That light? Always welcome. Your opinion? Not so much.

So if you’re looking to brighten up a friend, a stranger, or even a whole gathering—bring the light of your attention.

It’s the one-size-fits-all gift that brings warmth and can be felt.

All the best,

John
