YOUR BEST FRIEND
The Grasshopper said something in the wee hours one morning that stopped me in my tracks: “You are your own best friend.”
Hard to drift back to sleep after hearing that, right? That little nugget kept rolling around in my head.
After thinking about it, I realized it doesn’t mean you can’t have outside best friends. It just means that inside your own skin, you’ve got to be the person you rely on the most.
And that’s not narcissism. That’s not falling in love with your own reflection. Narcissism is about worshiping the person you made up and pretend to be. Being your own best friend is deeper than that — it’s trusting that quiet part of you that’s always there to:
- Show up for you, and
- Offer you the wisest counsel.
I remember Dr. Dave Dobson saying over 35 years ago that we’re all our own best counselors. He didn’t mean we shouldn’t get outside help — he just meant that when we do, there’s a part of us that knows whether what we’re hearing really fits.
The truth is, your best friend is available 24/7. You can reach them anytime. All it takes is quieting the noise in your mind long enough to let their voice come through loud and clear.
Your best friend won’t abandon you — not in your toughest moments. But they’re just hard to hear when your helpful thoughts are crowded out by overgrown weeds.
There are all sorts of ways to quiet your mind. Find the one that works best for you. And when you do, count on your best friend to come through.
