The Whole Truth

“Liars and angels both tell the truth.”That’s what The Grasshopper told me one morning.

So here’s a proposal that’ll never make it past committee: Let’s take the word truth out of our language — and stop wasting breath on what none of us can really prove.

Because there’s always gonna be shades of truth. And it’s in those shades that we hide from the light someone else is trying to shine on our version of it.

To my eyes, there’s only one truth you can count on: Reality. That’s the whole truth.

Once we start interpreting reality, we carve it up into smaller slices — our truth — which can’t be proven . . . only argued about.

I was at the gym one day, and two guys in the locker room were going at it over one of the hot-button issues of the day. Each one swore in their outside voice that he had “the truth.” What they really had were opinions — mislabeled as truth.

Did anyone win? Was anything settled? Not to this observer’s eyes or ears.

Should we stop talking about what we believe? I sure hope not. But maybe we can stop calling our beliefs the truth. I’ll make that promise if you will.

“The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” doesn’t apply when we’re talking about beliefs.

When someone says, “It’s my truth,” what they really mean is, “It’s my belief — my opinion — dressed up in righteousness.”

Argue for “your truth,” and you’ll stay arguing. Nothing gets settled.

If you want to stay unsettled for the rest of your life, keep spouting “your truth.”

Finally, here’s my opinion — and it’s just that: Most people who claim to have the truth on their side . . . are living a lie.

All the best,

John
