Levels Of Love
The Grasshopper once offered this little gem of wisdom: “If you’ve ever experienced love with someone, you still love them at some level.”
That’s stayed with me
My friend Jerry Stocking has his own one-word definition of love: Inclusion.
And I think he’s right. Maybe pure love is total inclusion — everyone, everything. Not sure any of us are quite there yet, but as the saying goes, “Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
So let’s come back to this idea of “levels of love.”
Even if you say you hate someone you once loved, that love doesn’t just disappear. It's still there — maybe buried, maybe quiet — but still alive at some level. The short version? Love never dies.
It’s always present. We just don’t always notice it. That reminds me of something that happened many years ago . . .
I went to my grandfather’s funeral with my mom. All my life she told me how much she hated him. She could list a dozen reasons why he was such a vile man. So I didn’t understand it when she cried at his funeral. I do now.
At some level, she loved him. And when that final goodbye came, that buried love surfaced — even if just for a moment.
Love’s always there, waiting for a space to fill. If there’s someone you find “unworthy” of your love, try this: Don’t force yourself to love them — just make a little space for them inside you. That’s all.
Because when you create that space, a level of love has room to show up.
And if you can’t do it for them, do it for you. Any level of love feels better than hate. So, act in your own best interest — create that space. You might find it brings a little warmth to your heart . . . and maybe even a smile to your face.
All the best,
John
