How Disappointed Are You With You?
The Grasshopper showed up early one morning and said, "You’re not the person you’re disappointed with.”
I had to sit with that one for a while.
How many times have you beaten yourself up for not being the kind of person you think you should be? If you’re like most of us, probably more times than you can count.
And let’s be honest—it never helps. It doesn’t fix anything. But that doesn’t seem to stop us from doing it, does it?
Here’s what The Grasshopper was pointing to: You’re not the person you’ve made up in your head. You're confusing you with your habits and patterns.
Sure, we all have routines that don’t serve us well. But they’re not us. They’re just conditioned behaviors—scripts we’ve been running for years.
Who we truly are—at our core—can’t really be defined. It's like infinity. You know it’s there, but try putting words to it. You can't. So instead, we describe ourselves by our routines, our patterns, our roles.
We’re responsible for what those patterns produce, yes—but we’re not the patterns themselves.
You’re not actually disappointed with you. You're disappointed with your reactions, your habits—those automatic ways you’ve learned to deal with the world.
The part of you that breathes, beats your heart, and keeps you alive—that’s not the part you’re upset with.
You’re frustrated with the image of yourself you’ve been carrying around. And that image? That’s just something you made up. Something you’ve gotten comfortable with over the years. And “comfortable,” in this case, usually means “stuck in a rut.”
You’re not your patterns. You’re not your image. You're something much larger—something limitless.
So here’s a little homework assignment: Start peeling off those labels you’ve given yourself—one by one—until there are none left.
That’s when you’ll meet the real you.And that’s someone you’ll never be disappointed with.
All the best,
John
