The Dance Is Over
Smokey Robinson once sang, “I gotta dance to keep from crying. ”That’s the unspoken mantra of anyone trapped in their life story.
Your life story is a script you wrote — one you’re determined to live out, even if the role doesn’t fit anymore.
So, the show goes on. And you keep dancing to keep the illusion alive.
“My feet are killing me,” you say, never realizing it’s the dance that’s wearing you out.
People who perform their life story become professional pretenders. And sooner or later, others see through the act. They might even try to tell you — but you just dance away to perform another day.
How do you know you’re caught in your story? Notice how many different acts you put on for different people. If every group gets a different you, that’s not living — that’s choreography. And the more dances you do, the less life you have.
The way out? End the dance. Stop performing. Find the life that exists beneath your life story.
That discovery begins when you stop reacting and start responding. Reacting means pulling out a routine — a two-step here, an electric slide there — always the right move for the right crowd. Responding means showing up fresh every time. No routines, no rehearsals — just trust.
Trust that there’s a deeper part of you that knows how to move through life without performing.
The real you doesn’t react — the real you responds.
So start noticing your dances. If you’re not dancing for the joy of it, you’re just reacting.
Responding lets you retire your dancing shoes and rest your tired feet in the calm, soothing waters of real life — the one beneath the story.
If you’re tired of dancing, stop. When you do, infinite responses open up — and you realize you only have one true dance partner: Life itself.
All the best,
John
