Allergic To Authority

You ever notice how most people don’t like being told what to do? I think it’s safe to say that, to some degree, most of us are allergic to authority.

And here’s something you can bank on: how much we resist authority often determines how well we play with others.

Whether you’re an iconoclast who challenges every tradition, or a “they say black, I say white” kind of person, you’re pushing back against authority. We all have a little of that in us. Some more than others. But the more allergic we are, the harder it is for others to find us appealing.

That allergy shows how much Peter Pan we still have inside us. You know, the “I won’t grow up” part that many of us carry around — even as adults still fighting for control.

Our first taste of control came early — as toddlers. Just watch who’s really in charge when a two-year-old says, “No.”

As we mature, that allergic reaction usually calms down. For most of us, it’s manageable. But for some, it still flares up every single day.

If you’re having trouble connecting with people — or staying connected — take a look at how often you sneeze at authority. Because that’s a real repellant.

As fun as it would be, you’ll never see a meeting of the “Polar Opposites Club.” They can’t even agree on where to meet.

In short, polarity is just another form of being allergic to authority. And if you don’t let that part of you grow up, well . . . you end up covering yourself with a big ol’ dose of manure.

Bottom line? You won’t pass the sniff test.

All the best,

John
