Inertia – The World’s Strongest Glue
If you feel stuck, chances are you’ve fallen victim to inertia.
And no, I didn’t make that up — that’s science.
Sir Isaac Newton, in his First Law of Motion — better known as the Law of Inertia — said, “An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion.”
That about sums it up, doesn’t it?
If you’re “at rest,” that sticky glob called inertia has you glued down tight. And if you’ve made resting a habit, well, it’s going to take a pretty strong wind to blow you off your derrière.
We try to talk our way out of it, don’t we?
“I should go to the gym.”
“I ought to clean out the closet.”
“I must get more motivated.”
But those words don’t move us — they just make inertia dig in its heels and harden the glue.
So how do we loosen it up?
One way is with fear.
Use your imagination — picture what might happen if you don’t do that thing you know you need to do. Make it vivid. Make it real. Sometimes the fear of the consequences is just enough to get you moving.
Or — you could try something a little more positive: the “5 Second Rule,” from the amazing Mel Robbins – the queen of podcasting.
Here’s how it works: when you have the instinct to act on a goal, count down from five . . .
Five, four, three, two, one — and move.
Take a step towards your goal. Pick up the phone. Walk out the door. Get yourself in motion.
As Mel puts it, “If you don’t move within five seconds, your brain will kill the idea.”
That quick countdown short-circuits all the overthinking and excuses — and before you know it, you’ve beaten inertia at its own game.
So . . . I wonder how soon you’ll follow Mel’s rule — and get off your stool.
All the best,
John
