The Best Things In Life Are . . .

There’s an old proverb — made famous in song — that says, “The best things in life are free.”

I’d like to tweak that a little: The best things in life are not always things.

Let’s face it — we live in a consumer-driven world. We love new stuff. The latest gadget, the newest car, the next upgrade. But have you noticed? Once the excitement wears off, that big purchase suddenly feels . . . ordinary. The French even have a word for it — ennui — which means boredom or lack of interest.

If the best things in your life are just things, I hate to say it, but you might be missing out on a lot of living.

Because when you dig a little deeper, most people’s real best things aren’t things at all. They’re moments — moments filled with joy and warmth.

Back in my “thing” days, I didn’t notice those moments much. They flew right by. But these days, they’re everywhere.

Like when I see a mom wrangling three young boys — it sparks joy in me. Reminds me of my own sons when they were growing up. Or when I spot a couple holding hands — that simple gesture brings a quiet smile.

Those are the moments that pay dividends. The kind you can’t buy, no matter how much money you spend.

Now don’t get me wrong — I’m still a consumer. I like nice things. But I’ve learned something important: the best things in life really are the moments.

So maybe take a second today and ask yourself — what are my best moments? The ones that bring you the most joy and warmth? Focus on them.

And the best news? They won’t come with a price tag.

All the best,
 John
