The Seesaw of Want
You ever notice how what we want is often counterbalanced by what we don’t want? It’s like being stuck on a seesaw — as long as both sides keep arguing, you just hang there, dangling in the middle.
Sure, you can mix oil and water for a while. Shake it hard enough, it looks like they’ve blended. But give it time — they’ll drift back to their corners.
That’s what happens when “want” and “don’t want” keep debating. Nothing moves. One of them has to win before anything actually happens.
We like to think that making a list — you know, pros and cons — helps. And sometimes it does. But if you’re doing that every day, you’re not making progress — you’re practicing being stuck.
It reminds me of that old expression — crude but true: “Shit or get off the pot.” And for our younger listeners — no, it has nothing to do with marijuana.
Conditional wanting is another trap. “I’d take my husband back if I knew he’d stay faithful.” That’s a classic “want / don’t want” statement. You’re torn between desire and fear.
The only way out of that tug-of-war is to take the conditions off the table. Because until you do, you’re stuck doing the world’s most popular dance — One Step Forward, Two Steps Back.
Yes, there may be consequences in going for what you want. But if you spend your life weighing them, you’ll spend your life waiting.
Rumi — that wise old Persian poet — offered some perspective. He wrote:
Don’t grieve for what doesn’t come
Some things that don’t happen
Keep disasters from happening
There comes a moment when you have to choose. “Want” or “Don’t want.” One has to win — and without conditions.
Because if you don’t pick, you’ll spend your life in a tug-of-war with your own peace of mind.
And I wish I could tell you one choice is better than the other, but that’s not my call. Only you can decide.
And decide means taking sides. It’s the action that removes the shadow from doubt.
After all — there’s a reason the slogan “Just Contemplate It” never caught on.
All the best,
John
