The Cleansing Shower
Most folks today take showers. Baths are kind of old-school now.
But for me, a shower is more than just an outer cleansing. It’s how I wash my inner troubles away.
I’ve had the same shower curtain for a few years now—and only recently did I notice the sayings printed on it.
One really caught my eye. It says, “Write your troubles in sand and your blessings in stone.”
That one stuck with me.
The lesson, I think, is simple: let the water wash away your troubles . . . and hold on tight to your blessings.
It reminded me of something I do almost every morning.
When something’s bugging me and I just can’t shake it, I picture the water doing more than cleaning me. I imagine it soaking right through my skin—washing out whatever’s bothering me within.
And as it runs down the drain, I picture my worries going right along with it.
It’s amazing how much lighter I feel afterward.
The warmth of the water alone can lift your mood—if you take a second to actually feel it.
But if you’re stuck in your head, replaying your worries, you miss that simple pleasure.
So I’ve made it a little ritual. I set an intention before I step in—that this shower is gonna rinse away more than dirt. And when I step out, I do feel better.
It’s kinda like aerobic exercise. The benefits don’t end when the workout’s over.
That sense of release, of calm, follows you throughout the day.
So here’s my suggestion:
Let your shower be more than getting clean.
Before you turn on the water, set an intention.
Then, just be present. Enjoy the warmth. Feel the water and the soap on your skin.
Focus on you—not the mental stew.
If you do, you might just find that your day runs a little smoother—less about sand, and more about stone.
All the best,
John
