Changing Personalities

The Grasshopper said this to me while I was watching football yesterday, “People don’t change personalities—but they can evolve within them.”

And I knew exactly what he meant.

It took me back years ago when my friend Paul said, “People don’t change.”
 I agreed then, and I still do—mostly.

But I’d add one thing: people can evolve.

There’s a personality typing system called the Enneagram. And if you’re looking for the spelling it’s E-N-N-E-A-G-R-A-M. Maybe you’ve heard of it. It breaks people into nine basic personality types, each with its own traits and tendencies.

But here’s where it gets interesting: within each type, there are levels.

Think of it like the branches of the U.S. military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard.

You might always be a Marine, but you can rise—or fall—through the ranks. Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Captain, Colonel, General . . . you get the idea.

Same thing with personality. You don’t stop being your type, but you can move up or down the scale—grow healthier or slide into less healthy territory.

Now if you want to dig deeper, go to enneagraminstitute.com. They explain it better than I ever could—and you can even take a free test to find your Enneagram type. They number them one through nine.

But here’s the takeaway: we can evolve.

We can grow toward the healthier side of who we already are.

You’re deeper than a label.

So if someone says in a derogatory tone, “You’re so concerned about your image,” maybe they’re right. And maybe you take offense. But know this: there are healthy levels within each personality type that are quite admirable.

Every type has its strengths and its pitfalls. There are no “wrong” numbers.

So instead of fighting your type, celebrate it.

If you’re a 3, for example—that’s the image-conscious type—aim to be a healthy 3.

Bottom line? People don’t change but they can absolutely evolve into a better version of themselves.

All the best,
 John
