Are You the Tin Man . . . or Woman?

There’s been a lyric rattling around in my head for years. It’s from that old song “Tin Man” by the band America.

And recently, I thought, “Okay . . . why is this line suddenly taking up space in my brain?” So I sat down to see if I could make sense of it.

The lyric goes: “But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn’t, didn’t already have.”

That line gets me every time.

Because in a way, we’re all the Tin Man — searching for something we already possess.

And the “something” we’re chasing is usually deeper than whatever’s showing up on the surface.

Most of us spend a big chunk of our lives looking for something just over the next hill . . . almost within reach, but not quite. it becomes this dance: one step forward, two steps back.

We go searching for Oz, when everything we truly need is sitting right at home.

But here’s the question we almost never ask ourselves about those big desires we chase: “What will that actually get me?”

We’re not after the thing itself — no not really. We’re after the feeling we think that thing will bring: satisfaction, fulfillment, pride, accomplishment . . . freedom . . . you pick.

We think it’s out there. But the truth is, you don’t have to click your heels or follow a yellow brick road to get those feelings. You already have them.

The Tin Man thought he needed a heart. So let me ask you: What do you think you’re missing?

Because it’s almost never the thing. It's the feeling you believe that thing will bring.

And that feeling? It’s already at home with you — even though we keep looking for it somewhere “over the rainbow.”

Now, there’s nothing wrong with going after what’s out there. Just be honest about why you want it. If the only reason is to get something you already possess . . . well, you may already be holding what you’re hunting for.

This Thanksgiving season, here’s one more thing to add to your gratitude list: You don’t need a pair of red shoes to find your way home.

All the best,

John
