Transparency
You hear this word everywhere these days — transparency. It’s become one of society’s favorite buzzwords.
The idea behind it is solid: shine a light on what’s usually done in the dark so nobody can quietly pull the wool over our eyes. Noble goal. Don’t you think? Don’t you think?
But here’s the twist: the thing that’s really been hidden from us . . . is our own ability to see through people.
The cowboy lawyer Gerry Spence once said, “We all have a BS detector.” And Dr. Dave Dobson not only agreed — he taught an entire method for using it. He called it “Other Than Conscious Communication.”
Now, these two were masters. We may never reach their level of awareness, but we can put a little of their wisdom to work in our own lives.
It starts with realizing that a part of you already knows “what’s what.” But over time, most of us have learned to ignore that inner radar and instead lean way too hard on our intellect when we’re sizing people up.
Here’s a simple exercise to sharpen that radar: Record any TV talk show and watch about five minutes of it with the sound off. Just watch the faces, the posture, the energy, or anything else you notice, or anything else you notice. Then rewind and watch the same segment with the sound on. You’ll be amazed at how much you picked up before you even heard a single word. you heard a
The realityreality is, we’re all transparent — every one of us. And that becomes powerful when you pay attention to more than just the words.
We tend to focus on how logical something sounds instead of how congruent it feels. That’s because we’ve been trained to ignore the sensations in our body — the ones that give us the real evidence before we reason anything out. The feeling always comes first. The feeling always comes first.
Ignore those signals, and it’s like a lawyer a lawyer walking into court without the full case file. You can still argue, but it’s going to be . . . well, trying.
So don’t worry about outsmarting anyone. Try out-sensing them. Outsmarting leads to one-upmanship and very little real communication. Out-sensing opens your eyes — and lets you "see through" far more than you’ll ever hear.
All the best,
John
