I'm Not My Type

Ever feel like you’ve been typecast? Yeah . . . me too.

It’s like everyone knows you for this one role you’ve played forever, but inside you’re itching to break out and try on a whole new character.

We’re a little like the Ugly Duckling wanting to audition for the Black Swan — and nobody’s buying it.

So we make our moves, we test the waters, we try something new . . . and what do we get? Pushback. Rejection. A quick “No, that’s not you.”

“You can’t do that — people won’t accept you in another role.” And the funny thing? Most of the time, we’re the ones saying it to ourselves.

Whatever our role is — Mother, Father, Indian Chief — it wasn’t always who we were. It's something we learned to play. And honestly? We’re pretty damn good at it.

But somewhere along the line we started believing it was everyone else keeping us from stepping into something new. If you look a bit closer, a little deeper, you’ll see the only one holding you back . . . is you.

The glue that keeps us stuck is the idea we have about who we are.

But who we are goes way beyond a single idea or identity. We’re a whole cauldron of yet-to-be-discovered possibilities — and we can shift into any one of them faster than Clark Kent gets into that Superman suit.

And here’s something worth remembering: “I have no choice” . . . is a choice.

When we buy into our current idea of ourselves as the only version that can exist, creativity shuts down. Doors close. Options disappear. But that idea? It’s just one of many — more than we can ever count.

So start getting comfortable with this: the role you’re playing is just that — a role. Once you see that, new possibilities stop hiding. They start showing up.

Our idea of who we are can act like blinders. Take them off, and suddenly you can see everything you’ve been missing.

I’ll leave you with this idea: The only thing you have to give up to be the type you want . . . is the IDEA that you can’t be it.

All the best,

John
