Going In Circles

The Grasshopper pops up at the oddest times. I was cooking dinner one night, and while I’m slicing up some onions he says, “There’s no turning corners if you’re going around in circles.”

I had to chew on that for a bit, but I knew he was onto something.

Patterns of behavior really are circular. They just keep looping around, bringing us right back to the same spot. Sometimes it feels like being stuck in a revolving door.

Déjà vu… I’ve been here before.

Our patterns run like clockwork. They’re so woven into our everyday life that we stop noticing them entirely.

And here’s the kicker: you can’t turn the corner if you’re caught in a circle. It just doesn’t work.

That’s when you know it’s time for an intervention.

We need a crash course in noticing — because if we don’t, the debris from our mishaps keeps piling up and we stay stuck on the beltway.

Noticing means we pause . . . even for a moment . . . and become a witness to our own patterns. We step back and actually look at what we automatically do — or don’t do.

And in that brief pause, we get to step out of our life and observe it like a stranger. You ever notice how it’s always easier to solve someone else’s problem? That’s the superpower of being an observer.

When you stop and notice, you interrupt your automatic behavior. And in that interruption lies the strategy for turning the corner. That exit has always been there, we just haven’t stopped to notice.

All the best,

John
