The Barometer of You
Here’s something we don’t talk about enough: The only real barometer for who you are . . . is your behavior. Not the story you tell about yourself, not your intentions, not the PR spin we all use from time to time. Just what you do.
When you strip everything away, it always comes back to that. What you say, what you hope to do, even what you defend . . . none of it can compete with the one thing that actually shows up in your life—your actions.
And the funny thing is, we almost never focus on that part. We look everywhere but at our own behavior.
But behavior—good, bad, or somewhere in between—always produces results. Intentions rarely do.
Whatever results you’re getting right now, you can trace them back to one place: your actions.
Yet it’s so easy to chalk up where we are in life to what someone else did . . . or didn’t do. And that actually proves the point: behavior is either the culprit, or the savior. We just forget to include our own in the equation.
So ask yourself: What actions brought you to where you are right now? What steps—maybe the same ones, over and over—keep walking you back to a place you don’t want to be?
If you really want to know how you measure up, start paying attention to what you actually do. Notice your patterns. You've been following a recipe—your behavior—and it’s been delivering exactly the results you have.
But here’s some good news: once you start noticing that behavior, the path you’re on becomes clear. That’s when you can start shifting it . . . stone by stone . . . and build a path to somewhere you actually want to go.
Because intentions are wonderful, but they only come to life through action.
I’ll leave you with this: Your barometer is your thermometer . . . If you’re stuck in a way of life that you rue, Adjust your behavior . . . and remove the glue.
All the best,
John
