Passion Is Necessary

What are you passionate about? There are a lot of people, perhaps even you, who can’t answer that question. And not having an answer keeps passion at arm’s length.

I believe passion is the main ingredient needed to succeed in any endeavor. It’s the fuel that propels you. Years ago, I wrote a pamphlet for clients called The Success Triangle. It listed three ingredients required for success: talent or skill, discipline, and passion.

Now, here’s the interesting part—most people starting out on a career path have tons of passion and not much talent. And that’s okay. Talent can be built.

The key is discipline.

And by discipline, I don’t mean doing a hundred sit-ups. I’m defining discipline here as being a disciple of someone’s philosophy – someone who already has an abundance of talent or skill.

That means to practice what it is they do until it’s second nature to you. Study them. Follow them on social media, read their books, watch their YouTube videos, or if they’re ancient and no longer with us, read their autobiography. Success leaves clues.

Passionate practice will have your talent come oozing out little by little until it can’t be contained any more. And now it’s there for the whole world to see.

But, as noted, many folks lack passion. The question they ask is: “How do I get me some of that?

I’m not sure I have a one-size-fits-all answer, but I do have a suggestion.

Ask yourself this question: What would I do for free if there weren’t bills to pay?

If you come up with an answer, that’s a window into the world you want to inhabit. The seed of passion gets planted. It now needs water and nurturing. That means it needs consistent, disciplined practice to grow it into a talent that you can offer to the world.

Passion is necessary and it can’t be bought, only created. To get you some, ask yourself: “What would I do for free?”

All the best,

John
