Choosing Choice

One morning, I watched my neighbor loading his preschool daughter into the car. And you didn’t need a crystal ball to see it — this guy was carrying the weight of the world. His posture, his face . . . everything about him said, “I’m stuck in my own head right now.”

What he didn’t realize — and what most of us forget — is that we always have something else available to us. Something simple, powerful, and almost always overlooked: Choice.

What amazes me is how often we defend our lousy moods or unresourceful states. Some people even wear them like a badge:“If you had what I’m dealing with, you’d feel this way too.”

Maybe that’s true . . . but clinging to that reaction keeps us from the one thing that can free us from it: Choice.

My neighbor didn’t see he had one. And he’s not alone. We all miss it sometimes.

That’s why it helps to pause when we notice we’re caught up in something. Because choice is always there — as constant as oxygen.

Most of our knee-jerk reactions aren’t really chosen at all; they’re conditioned. Automatic. That’s choice operating in the background — choosing for us.

But here’s the real question: Are your choices choosing you . . . or are you choosing them?

Either way, a choice gets made.

Even choosing not to choose is still a choice. In that case, you’re handing the controls over to your conditioning and letting it decide how you’ll react.

So here’s the reminder we all need: Choice is always present.

And the moment you recognize that, you break free — even just a little — from that prison of old programming. After that, there’s only one thing left:

Choice.

Choose to remember . . .  that you have a choice.

All the best,

John
