How Do You Know?

How do you know when you know something?

Ask people that question and you’ll see their “knowing strategy” in real time. Some folks look up like they’re pulling a picture out of thin air. Others tilt their head like they’re listening to an inner voice. And some people just feel it — a sensation somewhere in the body that says, “Yep . . . that’s how I know.”

And sure, taste and smell can play a role too.

But here’s the tricky part: what we claim to “know” is often not knowing at all. It can be conditioning. Imagination. Or sometimes . . . just flat-out fantasy.

Think of a husband or wife who “knows” their partner is cheating. They’ve built an entire movie in their mind — scenes, dialogue, the whole thing — even though none of it is actually happening.

They don’t know. They think they know.

Real knowing? That’s different. It doesn’t come from facts or specifics. It doesn’t come from the head at all. Real knowing comes from a quiet, peaceful place — the kind of place inside you that doesn’t argue, doesn’t posture, doesn’t need to be right.

Real knowing has no agenda.

It’s not about winning a point. It’s more like being in the right space.

And here’s the beautiful thing: when real knowing shows up, you don’t have to defend it. You don’t have to explain it. You don’t have to convince anyone. It’s kinda like love — you can’t really describe it, but you know when you’re in its presence.

And real knowing doesn’t just serve you. It’s universal. It’s something that benefits everyone it touches.

You can share it — in how you speak, how you treat people, how you move through your day — but you’ll never be able to track it back to some mental recipe. You won’t be able to say, “Oh yes, that came from Step 1, Step 2, Step 3.”

Real knowing flows. Like a mountain stream. It quenches a thirst. It floats a boat. It doesn’t care which one you use it for. It’s just being what it is.

It doesn’t come in different flavors, and one size really does fit all.

So here’s a toast to not knowing how you know. Because sometimes, that’s we get to real knowing.

All the best,

John
