Class Reunions

Have you ever gone to a class reunion? To me, most of them take on the same pattern.

You spend time catching up with people you haven’t seen in years, swapping stories, laughing about the “good old days.” But, for some, underneath all that small talk, there’s usually something else going on — an undercurrent that’s a lot more interesting.

It’s the unfinished business. Old sweethearts, old rivalries – old memories getting in the way of living life today.

Back in my DJ days, I played music for tons of reunions, which gave me the perfect vantage point to watch the room.

And believe me, certain songs would light up certain faces and trigger a look across the room that told you that memories just came rushing back. You could feel it. The air would almost thicken.

Some people acted on that moment. They’d walk over, start a conversation, maybe even share a dance. Others stayed glued to their chairs, wrestling with whether to make a move.

I used to wonder: Why not just go over? The same word always popped into my head — closure.

The thing about closure is that it’s a double-edged sword. It can clear the air and finally put the past to rest . . . or it can burst the bubble someone’s been holding onto for decades. And a lot of people would rather hold onto the fantasy than risk hearing an answer they don’t want.

So they stay stuck. In their seats. In their memories. In limbo.

But here’s the real question: Do you want to stay married to an illusion, or do you want the unvarnished truth — the kind of answer that can become a stepping stone to the next part of your life?

Asking will get you answers. Here’s something I learned a long time ago: You can ask anything of anybody if you’re not invested in what their answer has to be.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest class-reunion days of the year. And maybe it can also be a reminder that sometimes the rest of your life is just one honest question away.

All the best,
John
