Expect the Unexpected

Here’s a phrase that’s both brilliant and profoundly stupid: “Expect the unexpected.”

The dumb part? Believing you can somehow anticipate everything you never saw coming.

But the brilliant part is this: “Expect the unexpected” is one of the few, true statements you’ll ever hear.

Sure, we make contingency plans. They’re useful. But no matter how many plans we draw up, none of them covers every possibility.

Take the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti back in 2010. What plan could have prevented that? You can’t head off the unexpected—because, well, you didn’t expect it. But there is one thing you can always do when life blindsides you:

Respond.

The unexpected is just reality showing up in a different outfit. And many of us spend a lifetime trying to control reality instead of doing the one thing that actually works: responding to it.

The unexpected isn’t rare. It’s the norm. It lands on all of us every day. No one who has ever lived has been able to predict every twist and turn. But every one of us has the ability to respond when something drops out of the sky.

You can’t bend the unexpected to your will—any more than you can get sprayed water back into a garden hose.

But you can notice you're "all wet" . . . and respond.

If only . . .” is a reaction.“ Here’s what I’m going to do now” is a response.

I’m all for backup plans. They’re incredibly useful. But even the best backup plan can’t beat the most powerful tool you’ve got: your ability to respond.

And going back to Haiti for a second—that’s when I first heard one of the smartest lines ever used to describe an organization. It’s how they define the American Red Cross:

“The American Red Cross always responds.”

All the best,

John
