How Much Do You Charge?

Years ago, I worked for a guy in radio who once managed a station in Texas that had great ratings but terrible revenue. They were selling almost all of their commercial inventory — yet somehow still missing their budget.

So, he did something that made his entire sales staff think he’d lost his mind: He doubled the advertising rates.

His team told him, “Nobody’s going to pay that!” But he had a different take. He said, “Look, if only half of our current advertisers stay, we’ll still make the same money . . . and we’ll have more commercial space available to sell at the higher rate.”

And you know what? He pulled the trigger. Over half of the advertisers stayed on. They paid the new rate. And with one bold decision, he fixed the station’s budget problem.

So here’s my real question: How much do you charge to rent space in your mind?

Because if you’re anything like the rest of us, you’ve got a whole bunch of freeloaders in there — thoughts that take up space, contribute nothing, and show up day after day with the same tired story.

And as long as they’re camping out in there, there’s no room for anything better . . . anything higher-yielding.

It might be time to raise your rates.

Here’s the reality: you can’t control which thoughts show up. They just appear — one after another — knocking on the door, looking for attention. But you can control how long they stay.

The key is to simply notice them.

Take a minute — even right now — and watch your mind at work. Thoughts rise up out of nowhere. You didn’t order them. They’re just waiting in a line outside your awareness, and the moment you engage them, you’ve essentially handed them a lease.

But if you just notice them — without engaging — they fade.

You get to decide which thoughts earn a spot . . . and which ones get shown the door. That’s how you increase the value of your mental inventory.

Every time you practice noticing, you clear space for something new, something useful, something more rewarding.

So take a page from my old general manager:

Raise your rates.

All the best,

John
