Battle Of The Quotes
I remember when radio stations used to do those Battle of the Bands weekends. They’d play two songs back-to-back and then open up the phone lines. You’d call in, cast your vote, and the winner moved on to face the next challenger.
Simple idea — but brilliant.
It kept listeners hooked, and it gave the station a real-time pulse on what people liked. A musical survival of the fittest.
Well, I get a similar competition happening in my head — not with songs, but with quotes.
Think of your favorite movie. If you're like most people, one probably pops up right away. Not me. I get two — instantly — and they start wrestling for first place. One or the other takes turns winning. Depends on the mood, the moment, maybe even the weather.
And the same thing happens when I try to choose my all-time favorite quote. Two contenders step into the ring every time:
1. “Talk Doesn’t Cook Rice.” — Anonymous Chinese saying. Short. Sharp. A perfect reminder that talking about something isn’t the same as doing it.
2. "The reason life doesn’t work is because people don’t keep their agreements.” — Werner Erhard. A harder truth — but one that sticks with you.
For years I tried to decide which one deserved the crown. But here’s the twist — it finally hit me that it doesn’t matter. They both feed me. They both guide me. Choosing just one actually limits something that doesn’t need limiting.
Why pick one favorite when you can have many? Why shrink your world when you can expand it?
Imagine living life that way — with unlimited favorites, unlimited options, unlimited sparks of meaning. You’d have more joy to reach for, more ideas to draw from . . . and yes, more than one flavor to enjoy at Baskin-Robbins.
Maybe the win isn’t in choosing just one.
Maybe the win is giving yourself room for all of them.
All the best,
John
