Why Some People Click — And Others Don’t
A few years ago I did one of those values assessments tests — the kind where they hand you a big list and tell you to pick the things that matter most. At first you choose ten. Then you have to whittle it down to three, which gets a lot harder than you think.
My top three ended up being:
Family
Dependability
Honesty
That’s home base for me. Yours might look totally different, and that’s perfectly fine. The whole point is just to figure out what you’re built around — what your inner compass is set to.
The interesting part is what happens after you know your values. Suddenly you start seeing why certain people get under your skin. Not because they’re bad or because you're right and they’re wrong — but because their values aren’t sitting in the same place as yours.
And wow, does that create friction.
You probably know exactly what I mean. That family member you adore — truly adore — yet every holiday ends in some kind of tension? Yep. Values talking. Same with friends, relationships, coworkers. We make them wrong, they make us wrong, when really . . . we’re just conditioned differently.
You can get along with almost anyone if you work at it. But sharing core values? That’s kind of the secret sauce for long-term harmony.
So if you’ve never made your own list, it’s worth ten minutes. Just jot down what matters most to you and then pay attention to what other people value too. You’ll understand yourself better — and have a finer appreciation for where they're coming from.
It's a way to smooth out what could be a much bumpier ride.
All the best,
John
