What If . . .?
What if the thing you’ve always wanted — that big dream, that wish you’ve carried around forever — just isn’t available?
Then what?
I wish I had a perfect answer.
I don’t. But I do have a suspicion . . . and a suggestion.
You can hang on and hope. Many of us do. We grip the dream so tightly we leave fingerprints on it. But when we hold on like that, another “H” word tends to show up: heartbreak.
Jack Kerouac once wrote, “It all ends in tears anyway.”
Pretty blunt, right? But in its own way, it’s just another version of what The Buddha said about impermanence — nothing stays the same forever.
And here’s the strange twist:
When you want something so much you feel like you’ll stop breathing if it doesn’t happen — that’s often the moment right before a shift. A turning point. Something big trying to happen inside you.
That’s where this little exercise comes in.
First, imagine getting exactly what you want. Really see it. Turn it into a full-color movie in your mind. Feel it.
Then — and this is the hard part — imagine the opposite. Imagine it never happens. Never gonna happen. No matter how vivid the dream is, you don’t get it.
And then switch back.
And then switch again.
Back and forth, until you can move between the two in a heartbeat — like flipping a light switch.
When you’re done, walk away from it. Literally.
Go move your body. Take a walk, wash the car, give the dog a bath — anything that pulls you out of your head and into the real world.
Because when you step out of that “all or nothing” mindset, something interesting happens. New ideas start to bubble up. Options you couldn’t see before. A little creativity sneaks in through a side door you didn’t know existed.
And that’s the magic.
Options give you power. They give you room.
People with more options tend to win more often.
Be like a new branch of a tree in spring — flexible, able to bend, not break.
All the best,
John
