Stop, Look, Listen . . . And . . . (We’ll Get to That)
I remember in grade school being taught to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN before crossing railroad tracks.
Turns out, that little safety lesson makes a pretty good mantra for life.
STOP means interrupting whatever you’re doing. And since most of what we do runs on autopilot, it’s worth stopping once in a while and giving yourself an intermission. STOP pulls you back into the moment.
LOOK means actually seeing what’s going on. We do a lot of thinking about our behavior . . . but not much looking at it.
How many times have you asked yourself, “Why do I always do that?” Instead of asking why, try looking at what you’re doing.
The behavior itself is usually the culprit. But we get tangled up in the thoughts about it — often just to defend it. So don’t overthink it. Just LOOK.
Next comes LISTEN. Listen for something new.
You already know how your knee-jerk thoughts are going to respond. They’re well-rehearsed. Predictable. But what happens if you LISTEN for another answer? One that isn’t so top of mind?
That kind of listening gives new ideas a chance to come out and play.
And now, the most important one — the one that never made it into the original mantra:
FEEL.
We are feeling beings first and foremost. Feelings were around long before we learned the words for them.
But for most of us, FEEL is a rusted barometer. It hasn’t been used in so long, we forgot how powerful it is. So grab some WD-40 and get it working again.
You’ll FEEL an answer long before it turns into pictures in your mind or words in your head. FEEL is the first responder.
Pay attention to your body. When it comes to real knowing, it will run circles around your intellect.
And by the way — there’s no rule that says you have to wait 'til the New Year to adopt a mantra like this.
So let me offer one: STOP. LOOK. LISTEN & FEEL.
All the best,
John
