Your Life Force

Years ago, after getting an email from an old friend, The Grasshopper dropped in for a visit and offered this thought:

“The life you live and the life that lives you are totally different.”

That’s a meaty one to chew on for a while.

The email also included the phrase “Life is good.” Now, besides being a trademarked, upbeat slogan, that line quietly suggests a corollary — “Life is bad.”

But life isn’t either. At least not the life that lives you.

That reminds me of a story . . .

My three boys all love Star Wars. They were practically weaned on the original trilogy. We had so many Star Wars toys in the house that one of our storage closets is still called “The Star Wars Closet,” even though it’s been empty for years.

Funny thing is, I hadn’t seen the movie with them. I didn’t get around to watching it until a few years later at a drive-in we all went to. I was curious what had so completely captured their attention.

On the surface, it’s a classic good-versus-evil story. And sure, there’s Harrison Ford, spaceships, and great special effects. But beneath all of that is the real magic of the movie — The Force.

The Force is the energy that lives in all things. It’s life itself. And in Star Wars, the message is clear: The Force is neutral. It can be used for good or for evil.

It’s a lot like electricity.

Electricity can light up your house at Christmastime . . . or, sadly, electrocute a careless caroler who steps on a bare wire.

Electricity has no agenda. Its only intent is to flow.

The same is true for the life that lives us.

The life we describe to others — our life — is what author Eckhart Tolle calls “our life story.” And that story should never be confused with life itself.

There are countless sad stories and glad stories, but only one life.

Life flows into our story, but our story never changes life. It can, however, hide it from our view.

When we get wrapped up in the drama of our life story, we miss the chance to feel the magic of life flowing through us — through our mind and our body. We divert that energy by getting so tangled in the thickness of the story that we can’t see, or feel, The Force.

Reconnecting with life has a way of smoothing out the story.

So if your current drama is taking you for a bumpy ride, maybe it’s time to call a timeout . . . and fire up the road grader known as life.

Take a moment today to rediscover it.

It’s the force that powers your Millennium Falcon — and Santa’s sleigh. And it can turn even the most ordinary existence into an adventure . . . even on Christmas Day.

All the best,

John
