A Believable Argument

It seems anyone can make a believable argument . . . if you’re making it to people who already believe what you believe.

The minute your argument goes off the rails is when you run into someone who has different details.

I don’t know about you, but I believe in plenty of things I can’t prove. I just don’t argue for them anymore.

That didn’t used to be the case.

I could argue with the best of them. After all, I once hosted a radio talk show. And if you’ve ever listened to talk radio, you know arguing is always on the menu. Every day. That’s where you try to make other people eat their words.

But over time, I’ve come to believe arguing is mostly a waste of breath . . . and so is debating — which is really just a more formal way of arguing.

Now, that doesn’t mean I won’t say what I strongly believe. It just means I won’t argue with you if you hold a different, fervent, unprovable belief.

I’ll listen. I just won’t participate in a shoot-out at dawn.

Some people love to argue. I tend to avoid them like the plague.

Still, they do serve a purpose in society. Lawyers come to mind.

If I ever need one, I’d want the very best I could afford. And even then, the best lawyers still lose cases — sometimes even when the facts are on their side. Just think back to the O.J. Simpson trial in the 1990s if you need an example.

So I’m simply stating what I believe here.

If you believe something different, I honestly applaud you.

I just won’t join you in the argument groove — especially over a belief I can’t prove.

All the best,
 John
