Low Passion Alert
The Grasshopper once asked a great question: “Is your toner running low?”
If you’ve ever wrestled with a copy machine, you know the deal. The toner’s low, and suddenly everything that comes out is washed out and fuzzy. Not sharp. Not defined. Just . . . tired-looking.
Sometimes life feels like that too.
There are times when my “toner” is definitely low. That’s when I can easily slide into what I call my “nobody loves me” mode. Passion is flat, focus is fuzzy, and nothing seems crisp or clear. Life is hard to read when your tank is running empty.
Even the stuff that used to light me up can look dull when passion fades. And that fading is a warning sign. If you don’t catch it, you don’t just lose passion — things start to feel like they’re disappearing altogether.
Here’s the good news: the simple act of noticing helps. When you notice you’re low, you actually have a shot at doing something about it. When you don’t notice, it starts feeling like fate, like you’ve already got a reservation with destiny.
For me, the big warning sign is that line: “Nobody loves me.” When that pops up, that’s my cue. That’s when I start looking for evidence that the story I’m telling myself isn’t actually true. And even on the days I can’t find much proof “out there,” I still have one option left:
“I love me.”
And strangely enough, that counts.
Finding even one counter-example — one tiny “maybe not” — cracks the door open. And once the door to possibility opens, creativity tends to wander in. And creativity is just another word for passion showing back up.
So if you’ve drifted into that gray zone where life feels flat and passion feels missing, try this: play with possibilities. Ask “What if?” — even if your “what ifs” feel like long shots. As Norman Vincent Peale said, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
When passion runs low, get curious about what might still be possible. Curiosity wakes up creativity. And once creativity kicks in, the picture starts coming back into focus.
And just like that, your life starts printing clearly again.
All the best,
John
