Focus On What You Have Now

The things I talk about on this site usually arrive from out of the blue. I don’t go looking for them.

They just show up.

I tend to credit those moments to a part of me I call The Grasshopper. And if I’m being honest, we all have one — that inner voice that drops little surprise messages on us when we’re not expecting them.

Recently, he handed me this raw piece of reality:

“It doesn’t matter what you had then. It’s what you have now that matters.”

Like most of his messages, I didn’t get it right away. I had to sit with it for a while . . . see how it applied to my life.

And maybe yours.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to slip into a backward mindset?

To drift back to a time when things were “peachy keen”… or “swell”… or whatever word you want to use for when life felt easier.

And then — almost without noticing — you compare then to now.

And when those old conditions aren’t present anymore, sadness sneaks in the back door.

That comparison sets the trap.

Climbing out of that funk — that mental junk — starts with recognition.

Recognize that you can’t make wreaths from past laurels.

The only tools you actually have to work with are the ones sitting in front of you right now . . . Not the ones that used to be in the shed.

So here’s the move:
Become a mental MacGyver.

Use what you have now to fashion a solution — not what you wish you still had.

Because what you had then really only lives in your gray matter.
It’s an idea. A memory. A trip to a land that doesn’t exist anymore.

And every time you travel in that direction, you delay something productive.

You trade forward motion for frustration and aggravation.

So instead, pause  . . . take stock of what you have now.

And use that on something that actually matters.

All the best,
John
