A Brainchild Springs Forth From a Pregnant Pause

Here’s a little secret I haven’t shared with many people . . . until now.

I worship at a different altar than most folks.

I worship at the altar of silence.

Because for me, silence is where creativity is born.

Think about this for a second. Instant answers usually show up right on the heels of a question. They’re quick. Sometimes efficient. But most times . . . they’re predictable.

But the pause? The pause delivers more bundles of joy than a whole flock of storks.

Great ideas can be born at any moment—if we can resist the temptation to use the contraception of instant answers.

Pausing is the incubation period. It's what delivers healthy, pink-cheeked ideas instead of half-formed reactions.

So what exactly are we pausing?

We’re pausing our endless supply of pat answers. The automatic replies. The stock phrases. The things we say just because we’ve always said them.

Silence creates space. And in that space is where creativity sneaks in.

You don’t have to take this on faith. Try it out.

The next time you feel a familiar reaction rushing to the tip of your tongue . . . pause. Just for a beat. Sit in the silence.

That’s where conception begins.

We’re conditioned to speak. But a more natural response is often to pause.

And the more often you return to that quiet place, the more organic your answers become.

In silence, there’s no room for the mental noise that keeps new ideas from being born—in all of us little girls and boys.

Coca-Cola® said it best:

“It’s the pause that refreshes.”

All the best,

John
