Keeping Up Appearances

The Grasshopper said something one day that stopped me cold: “Your life is more important than your lifestyle.”

Think about that for a second.

You’ve heard the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses,” right? It’s the idea that you have to match your neighbor’s lifestyle just to be considered . . . worthy.

That way of thinking—measuring your value by what you own—is an American tradition that’s long overdue for retirement.

How many breadwinners have worked longer hours, taken on more stress, and sacrificed their health just to afford what the Joneses had? Where’s the win in that? An earlier grave . . . a nicer coffin?

There’s sacrifice—and then there’s madness. Grinding yourself down just to maintain a lifestyle isn’t noble. It’s lunacy.

Working hard for something meaningful? That’s fulfilling. Working hard just to look successful? That’s empty.

I don’t know how many years—or even minutes—any of us have left. But I do know this: living without having to manufacture worth feels purposeful . . . and priceless.

This isn’t a rant about what money can’t buy. It's about why we’re here in the first place.

I don’t believe anyone’s purpose in life is to be a showboat. And if it is? They’ll eventually sink with the sun.

I don’t usually ask “why” questions—but this one matters: Why are you here? What’s your purpose?

Let that purpose flow into everything you do . . . and let the Joneses keep up with you.

All the best,

John
