Have Faith?
In the spirit of full disclosure, I believe in having faith. I really do.
But blind faith? That’s where I start to lose confidence in the whole idea.
I have faith in things that have worked before — because there’s evidence. There’s a track record. There’s proof that earns my trust.
Where things fall apart for me is when all the facts are stacked against a belief . . . and the belief stays in place anyway. That’s usually the moment my faith quietly exits the room.
What fascinates me though is how some people respond when they’re buried under evidence that suggests their faith might be misplaced. Instead of reassessing, they double down. They become even more “faithful.”
And without realizing it, they’ve crossed the border into hope.
Not the good kind — the kind that’s hopeless.
When I conducted my stop smoking seminars, I would ask people if they were ready to stop smoking. Some would answer, “I hope so.” My question to them was: “If you hope in one hand and spit in the other, which hand will fill up first?”
If you hire someone to do a job for you, you don’t hope they’ll succeed. At least, you shouldn’t. You check their history. You look for proof. Your faith is based on what they’ve done before.
Now, like every investment ad on television, there’s an important disclaimer here:
Past performance doesn’t guarantee future results.
Which is exactly why risk assessment matters. You don’t commit to people, plans, or outcomes on blind faith — or worse, on hope.
But hope can be useful. It can calm your nerves for a moment. But it’s only a rest stop, not a destination. Reality is still driving the bus, and hope doesn’t get a vote on how things turn out.
So the message here is pretty simple:
Only put your faith in something that actually has a prayer of happening.
All the best,
John
