Go Get ‘Em
Here’s a question the Grasshopper asked decades ago: “Are you a go-getter . . . or a come-find-me?”
I’ve been both. One's more rewarding than the other. And—no surprise here—one’s a lot less productive.
I’m guessing you already know which is which.
These days, people are paying a premium for higher education. And the mindset of a lot of graduates goes something like this: “I studied hard for four years. I’ve got a higher-than-average GPA. I should be in high demand.”
Sounds reasonable . . . but here’s the raw reality: at that point—no matter what your degree’s in—you’re a salesman. You’ve got to sell someone on you.
That’s true in job hunting. Dating. Politics. And about a dozen other areas we don’t have time to list.
Which reminds me of a story . . .
Back in the ’80s, I was pitching a communication program to a law firm. The owner had twenty-six attorneys working for him. Before I laid anything out, I asked a simple question: “What would you like your people to learn?”
His answer was immediate—and loud. “I want them to know they’re salesmen. Every one of them thinks they’re Perry Mason, and that business is just going to walk through the door.”
That changed the meeting. I scrapped the communication program and sold him a sales seminar.
Because whether we realize it or not . . . we’re all salesmen. We’re always pitching something to someone.
Sometimes it’s big. Sometimes it’s as small as persuading someone to eat at the restaurant you want.
But if you play the “come-find-me” game, here’s what actually happens: You end up playing hide-and-go-seek . . . with a really good hiding spot.
And the odds of someone finding you? South of slim.
This isn’t a pep talk. It’s a reality reminder. You might have the best mousetrap ever built—but if you don’t put any cheese out there, the only thing you’ll catch is more people telling you to go to the job fair.
I wish it worked differently. I really do. But that “come find me” strategy just keeps us on the couch. . . being a slouch . . . and our pocketbook continually says, “ouch.”
All the best,
John
